Chapter Eleven

Morning came to find Laney wrapped up in silk sheets and the strong arms of Anubis. She settled in closer to that warmth, almost surprised to find herself there. Still, it was seconds after she’d woken up. Her brain hadn’t really come back online yet, so she didn’t question it as much as she might have otherwise.

The sun rose over the horizon and gently streamed in through the open window. It was nice, that time of day. Laney mused that much later would be the same stifling hot that had caused her to pass out yesterday.

Behind her, Anubis stirred. On instinct, she pressed her body closer to his and held his arm tighter around her waist. She found that she didn’t mind him being there, though she was coming to the realization that she had allowed him into her bed last night. There was the vague recollection of a moonlight conversation, with her heart racing, and his concerned face.

“Are you awake?” His words were nothing more than a low murmur pressed against her skin. Laney hummed luxuriously, feeling utterly relaxed.

She shifted more in his arms. “Yes.” A few moments of silence passed. “Can I ask how you came to be in bed with me?”

Anubis stiffened. “You don’t remember?”

“Only a little.”

He sighed; a tiny little thing not directed at her. “You had a nightmare last night. About being trapped here in the duat because you’d died. You said, ‘We have to get it off.’ I think you were talking about the necklace.”

The easiness of the morning slipped away.

“Good thing it was just a dream,” she muttered hollowly. She knew that dreams were never just what they were in the moment.

“I think it might be— well, I don’t want to say anything definitive. But it’s possible…” he trailed off.

“Tell me,” she demanded, sitting up suddenly. When she twisted around on the bedsheets, she found herself looking down at Anubis’s features twisted with worry.

“There’s another god,” he began slowly, sitting up as well. Together, they sat cross legged on the bed. “You have most likely heard of Set— I’d actually be surprised if you didn’t.” Laney nodded. “He and I have had our issues over the years, thanks to one act that I performed in the earlier days of my rule over the duat. He and my father, Osiris, were enemies, and Set murdered Osiris after he became the king of Egypt. Usurping the throne was his goal, and he succeeded.

After Horus and Iris completed the steps necessary for his resurrection, we allowed Osiris to return back to life in the overworld. When Set realized what was happening, he came to me and demanded that I prevent Osiris from being resurrected. I didn’t, and now Set has been holding a grudge.

I think it’s possible that Set has cursed the necklace. Perhaps whoever places it upon their neck without fully embracing the role as my mistress is subject to whatever Set wishes for them.”

He finished his theory with finality. Laney sighed and held
